COVID-19. With the outbreak becoming increasingly severe, the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring a pandemic, and schools turning to online learning for weeks, our meetings for CAPE were undoubtedly affected.
It was very disappointing to not be able to meet in person to work on our organization, especially as we were only in the beginning stages of our work, but to protect ourselves and our communities, we had to take necessary measures.
This limitation raised a conflict for us: How could we meet with nearly 20 people without meeting in person? The solution? Video call.
For most of us, this was our first experience with online meetings. It definitely took some tries, as apps weren't working, connection issues arose, and many of us could not access the meeting-- despite these technical difficulties, with the cooperation of every member and leadership of our mentors, we were able to set up our online meeting at last.
We first gathered in one large meeting to catch each other up on each group's plans and progress for the day, communicating our agendas and what we needed to get done for the day. Afterward, we gathered in our respective groups and worked hard for over 2 hours. We got so much done in advancing our project!
I'm sure I can speak for many, if not all of us, when I say that initially, we were doubtful. As this was the first online meeting for many of us, we had our doubts regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of these meetings. Even throughout technical difficulties and this situation having been such an unprecedented one, our group members all phenomenally accomplished their given tasks and communicated productively. I think it is for sure safe to say that our first online meeting was a success!
While we hope that the COVID-19 pandemic will resolve soon so we may meet in person again, for the time being, video meetings is definitely an option... Not even this virus can stop us from fighting for our cause!
Wash your hands, cover your cough/sneeze, avoid close contact, and stay home if you feel sick! Stay safe everyone!
